Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering

Food businesses are placed under a legal obligation to provide food hygiene training for their staff to a level ‘commensurate to their work activities’.

The law requires that all food handlers need to be trained according to their food handling work activities. Should an employee achieve a food safety qualification, which is suitable for the work they do, it will assist food business operators in proving that they have displayed due diligence and are therefore compliant in the eyes of the law.

On obtaining a food safety qualification, employees who handle food will gain a firm grasp of the importance of food hygiene and knowledge of the systems, techniques and procedures involved. Furthermore, those individuals that have successfully completed a food hygiene course will have the confidence and expertise to deliver quality food safely to customers.

Our food safety qualifications are intended for anyone working in catering, hospitality or manufacturing settings where food hygiene is essential as food is prepared, cooked, served or produced. Typical environments may include pubs, hotels, restaurants, retail, factories, contract catering, fast-food outlets, hospitals, care and nursing homes, schools, prisons and the armed forces.

Qualification Levels

  • Food Safety Level 1 Award - ensures that employees from all food sectors are equipped with a knowledge of basic food hygiene to enable them to produce safe food.
  • Food Safety Level 2 Award - ensures that a food handler is aware of the hazards and controls associated with the types of food they produce.
  • Food Safety Level 3 Award - ensures that supervisors are aware of the legislation applicable to food safety and how to communicate the required standards to employees.
  • Food Safety Level 4 Award - ensures that managers are aware of the procedures and standards required to ensure safe food is served at all times and that due diligence is taken.

Course Overview

Food businesses are placed under a legal obligation to provide food hygiene training for their staff to a level ‘commensurate to their work activities’.

In practice, this means that food handlers working in a variety of catering or retail outlets must be trained to level 2 in food safety/hygiene. Level 2 food safety training is the equivalent of the old basic food hygiene certificate.

The Food Safety Level 2 training course is ideal for food handlers who work in a catering environment, including restaurants, cafes, hotels, bars, fast-food outlets, takeaways, mobile food trucks, kitchens, hospitals, schools and colleges. Public confidence in terms of food safety is a major concern for any business in the food sector.

Increasing public, media and legislative scrutiny means food businesses must get it right first time, every time. This online food safety training course helps ensure your staff understand their role in maintaining food safety.

Food safety and food hygiene ratings are never far from the news.

Sharing local establishments’ food hygiene ratings is a popular topic of engagement on many social media channels and in local newspapers, and unfortunately, it’s often those scoring at the lower end of the scale that make headlines.

Effective food safety and hygiene training isn’t just for businesses with a kitchen, it applies equally to businesses selling pre-packaged food and can help protect your business and ensure you avoid unwanted publicity.

Ensure your staff understand their role in maintaining food safety with a course written by one of the world’s leading food safety experts, Richard Sprenger, and accredited by the UK’s leading organisation for regulated food safety qualifications.

This online food safety and hygiene training course is ideal for those who work with pre-packaged foods or in low-risk catering environments.

Course Overview

Food businesses must, by law, ensure that all staff have received the appropriate level of safety and hygiene training commensurate with their role and risk.

It is a useful induction programme for those undertaking work-experience in a food business, and for anyone with a keen interest in learning more about the basic principles of food safety and hygiene.

This online course is suitable for those working in a catering environment who are not directly involved in the preparation or handling of high-risk foods, but work in an environment where food is handled elsewhere or only deal with low-risk foods. It is also ideal for those working with pre-packaged or wrapped food.

If you work in a low-risk catering environment or are simply looking to expand your knowledge as a hobbyist, this course is ideal for you.

However, if you are involved, or are going to be involved in the direct preparation of food within a business environment, you must be trained to a higher level.

Highfield’s Food Safety Level 2 e-learning course is ideal for most food handlers working in a catering or retail environment. If you work in a food manufacturing environment, the Food Safety in Manufacturing Level 2 course is perfect for you.

Supervisors and managers must be trained to a higher level again, and the Food Safety Level 3 e-learning course is designed for this level of employee. It is also useful for owners of small catering businesses.
